There is a tremendous desire for learning among the children who attend the FUCPE, a community school in Villa Caoba, La Romana, Dominican Republic. Our collaborations in the Dominican Republic affirm through, countless conversations with children at a multitude of ages the passion for advancement, both during primary and secondary school as well as education beyond.

The desire expressed by parents to see their children excel is remarkable and something we can all identify with. The community pride for the school and the mission of its founder Elvitaña Roberts can be felt during each meeting and workshop. The parents are eager to receive education for themselves as well, through vocational classes teaching basic trade skills, which can be used to earn money, through access to books and technology for improved literacy, and through access to nutritional programs.

The community and greater region simply do not have access to the tools needed to pursue their talents. The infrastructure, both physical and pedagogical, does not exist in any form that is enough to provide the necessary outlets for people to gain knowledge and explore new skills. All who have supported the project thus far, however, recognize that world-class talent can be found anywhere, and those with access to the necessary tools and outlets are those who will achieve their full potential.

The Vision

The space between the existing school and new primary school will serve as a basketball court and playground. The playground will be shaded by the classrooms above. Both the ground level and the classroom level will be connected with a series of multi-colored platforms, topped with soft foam play-ground tiles for the safety of the students moving up and down. Behind the playground will be the kitchen and dining area, reception and bathrooms.

El espacio entre la escuela existente y la nueva escuela primaria servirá como cancha de baloncesto y área de juegos. El patio de recreo estará sombreado por los salones de arriba. Tanto el nivel del suelo como el nivel de la sala de clases estarán conectados con una serie de plataformas multicolores, coronadas con azulejos de espuma suave para la seguridad de los estudiantes que se mueven hacia arriba y hacia abajo. Detrás del patio de recreo se encuentran la cocina y el comedor, la recepción y los baños.

Community Spaces / Espacios Comunes

The health clinic and vocational school are located on the ground level for ease of access outside of school hours. The clinic is separated from the rest of the building spaces by a corridor, to prevent the spread of illness. The clinic includes exam rooms facing the street for ventilation, and emergency/vaccination space, and a laboratory. The vocational school is a large open workshop with storage underneath the atrium stairs. Access to all spaces is controlled by the central reception room.

La clínica de salud y la escuela vocacional se ubican a nivel del suelo para facilitar el acceso fuera de las horas de clase. La clínica se encuentra separada del resto del espacio de los edificios por un pasillo, para evitar la dispersión de las enfermedades. La clínica incluye salas de examinaciones frente a la calle para la ventilación y espacio para emergencias/vacunas y un laboratorio. La escuela vocacional es un taller amplio y abierto con almacenamiento debajo de las escaleras del atrio. Se controla el acceso a todos los espacios por una sala de recepción central.

Library and Dining / Biblioteca y Comedor

The library/computer room and kitchen/dining room are located on the second level to serve as flexible spaces for both the school and the community. The library and computers will offer access to technology and improved literacy among both adults and children. The kitchen/dining space will be the school cafeteria but also serve as a community space to host nutritional workshops. The community could also use the space to sell prepared food items. Outside of both spaces, a balcony overlooks the atrium which provides flexible seating and additional gathering space.

La biblioteca/sala de computadoras y la cocina/el comedor se ubican en la segunda planta para servir como espacios flexibles para ambas la escuela y la comunidad. La biblioteca y las computadoras ofrecerán acceso a la tecnología y el mejoramiento de la alfabetización tanto para los adultos como los niños. El espacio para la cocina/ el comedor servirá como la cafetería de la escuela, pero también como un espacio comunitario para presentar los talleres sobre la alimentación. La comunidad también podría usar el espacio para vender productos alimenticios preparados. Afuera de ambos espacios, una terraza mira desde arriba al atrio, lo cual proporciona asentamiento flexible y espacio adicional para reuniones.

Classrooms / Aulas

The classrooms are located at the highest level of the buildings to provide security and maximize daylight and ventilation. The shape and orientation of the classrooms is informed by many sustainable design strategies, including orienting the rooms toward the north for diffuse light through the clerestories, providing windows on both sides for cross ventilation, vertical louvers on the east and west side to block unwanted glare, and rainwater harvesting and solar panels on the roof.

Los salones de clase se ubican en la planta más alta para proporcionar seguridad y maximizar la luz natural y la ventilación. Se basa la forma y la orientación de los salones de clase en muchas estrate-gias de diseños sustentables que incluyen: la orientación de los salones hacia el norte para difundir la luz a través de los claristorios, proporcionar las ventanas en ambos lados para la ventilación cruzada, los lamas verticales en el lado este y oeste para bloquear el resplandor no deseado, la recogida de aguas pluviales y los paneles solares en el techo.

Local Partnerships/Asociaciones Locales

The success of the project depends on strong relationships with local contractors, craftsmen, architects, engineers, and material suppliers. The design team has formed a partnership with “El Artistico” Jose Ignacio Morales, a renowned metal worker who has created installations and worked with architects around the Dominican Republic and internationally.

In addition to his large metalworking operation, Morales also leads his own foundation, which works with teens and adults to develop usable trade skills in his shop. The teens and adults work as apprentices to Morales, and are empowered with metalworking, welding, and other necessary skills to start businesses and contribute meaningfully to the community.

The intent of the partnership with Morales is to engage him in the direct fabrication of various elements of the building, to provide useful work for his apprentices, many of whom are community members, and to create a vocational school within the completed building for Morales to offer instruction to people in the community.

El éxito del proyecto depende de las relaciones fuertes con contratistas locales, artesanos, arquitectos, ingenieros, y proveedores de materiales. El equipo de diseño ha formado una asociación con “El Artístico” José Ignacio Morales, un conocido obrero metalúrgico que ha creado instalaciones y trabajado con arquitectos en varias partes de la República Dominicana e internacionalmente.

Además de su grande operación de metalurgia, Morales también encabeza de su propia fundación, la cual trabaja con adolescentes y adultos para desarrollar destrezas de oficio útiles en su taller. Los adolescentes y adultos trabajan como aprendices para Morales y la metalurgia, la soldadura y otras destrezas necesarias les habilitan para empezar negocios y contribuir de una manera significativa a la comunidad.

El propósito de la asociación con Morales es involucrarse en la fabricación directa de varios elementos del edificio, proveer trabajo útil para sus aprendices, muchos de ellos miembros de la comunidad y crear una escuela vocacional dentro del edificio construido para que Morales dé clases a las personas de la comunidad.

Community Engagement/Participación de la comunidad

During the programming and design process, many meetings and workshops were conduct-ed with the community. The purpose of the meet-ings was to develop a fundamental understanding of the cultural, political, historical “forces” at play, the motivations of various stakeholders in the project, the needs and wishes of those of all ages, and how the community will grow with the project.

Participatory design sessions were conducted on site, where community members were invited to contribute requests for certain spaces, ideas for how the land could be used, and to identify specif-ic needs which the buildings should address. The majority of the participants have children currently enrolled in the FUCPE school, and are active sup-porters of the school’s needs outside the classroom. These meetings were held at various stages during programming, schematic design, and currently in the design development phase of the project.

Durante un proceso de programación y diseño, se realizaron muchas reuniones y talleres con la comunidad. El propósito de estas reuniones fue desarrollar un entendimiento fundamental de la cultura, política, las “fuerzas” históricas en juego, las motivaciones de varias partes interesadas en el proyecto, las necesidades y los deseos de todos de varias edades, y cómo crecerá la comunidad con el proyecto.

Se realizaron sesiones participamos de diseño allí mismo, donde invitaron a los miembros de la comunidad que contribuyeron sus peticiones para ciertos espacios, ideas para cómo se podría usar el terreno e identificar necesidades específicas para que se pudieran usar los edificios. La mayoría de los participantes tienen hijos ingresados actualmente en la escuela FUCPE y son colaboradores activos en las necesidades de la escuela fuera de los salones. Se celebraron estas reuniones a varias etapas durante la programación, diseño esquemático y continúan actualmente durante la etapa del desarrollo de diseño del proyecto.
